SKYMUN Deputy Secretaries-General 2014
Esteemed delegates, Advisers, Student Officers, and guests,
Hello, my name is Jessica Kim, and I am currently a sophomore at Seoul Foreign School. I started off my MUN career in the eighth grade. I was astonished by how many bright, young students had shown up to the conference with high spirits and creative solutions to a variety of crises. I was finally at a place where the youth had the potential for change, an opportunity to alleviate burdens of other nations. The speeches made by the Secretary General, DSG, and guest speaker, only added to my excitement for the conference to commence.
However, I do admit that I was very timid and mute at first; and even encountered the horror of the chair’s discretion used to make delegates speak. My head was filled with research, yet I was still fearfully shy. But at one point, I realized that all the hard work, well-done research, and the MUN experience would only go to waste if I did not overcome my timidness. That was when my passion for MUN sparked. It felt good to have my ideas recognized by others, and by creating resolutions together, I was able to meet new, worldly friends who were also interested in relieving global issues.
MUN is a place where the youth hold the power to a better future; one with less crises and increased availability of humanitarian aid to less economically developed countries as well. The topic of empowering the youth as model global citizens indicates that many of the delegates today will become great leaders or global citizens that better the nations for the next generations. As Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a few caring citizens can change the world; indeed it’s the only thing that the world ever has.”
I wish all the participants the best of luck, and most importantly be creative and have fun.
Sincerely,
Jessica Kim

Esteemed Delegates, Advisers, Student Officers, and guests,
Hello. I am Soo Ho (John) Park, currently a junior attending Korea International School, and it is my utmost pleasure to welcome you all to the first SKYMUN conference.
When I took my first step as a MUNer in 8th grade, I remember being a little nervous, thinking that I may not have the confidence to speak in front of a large audience. Because there were only limited opportunities to attend conferences as a middle-schooler, I initially struggled to familiarize myself with MUN. However, as I entered high-school and attended various national and international conferences, my fear and timidness subsequently disappeared, allowing me to grow more and more outgoing and eager to share my opinions with others. That’s when I started to genuinely enjoy collaborating with other delegates and formulating creative solutions aimed towards combatting the prevalent world issues today. I hope that all delegates participating in this conference seize the educational opportunity, the opportunity to learn about the United Nations and explore one’s talents at such a young age.
I look forward to this year’s SKYMUN conference and wish all of the delegates an unforgettable and rewarding experience. And remember, when one person learns a piece of information or converses in a fruitful discussion, the intellectual content shared during that conversation does not simply dwindle away, but it flourishes, diffusing from one person to another later extending into the minds of many others. My hope is that the SKYMUN conference will continue on as an annual event providing more opportunities for enthusiastic and young individuals.
